Welcome to the World of Magicka
Paradox Interactive will be branching into the console market later this year with two new games: there’s the team-based multiplayer shooter Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West, and, the one I’m most interested in, Arrowhead Game’s Norse-inspired fantasy action game Magicka, which is due for PC and console downloadable release in Q2 2010.
Magicka looks similar to hack n’ slashers like Diablo, but apparently it’s not an action-RPG at all. Instead, it appears to be more of a co-op focused arcade action game with power-ups and unique team-oriented spellcasting tactics. I’ve posted a new trailer and interview video below if you’d like to learn more about the wonderful world of Magicka.
Backbreaker Dev Diary 1 - A New Way to Play Football
NaturalMotion’s football game Backbreaker promises to completely revolutionize video game pigskin when it ships this May for PS3 and Xbox 360, and this first developer diary video tackles the basic features that make the game so very different from the typical Madden-style football simulation.
VGB Week in Review: 2/1/2010 - 2/7/2010
Enjoy the Super Bowl? Thought it was a pretty good game myself. Not particularly memorable in any way, but both teams played good, clean football in all phases. I found myself nodding off during the commercial breaks though. I didn’t see a single ad that was funny or creative in the slightest. I also felt a little disappointed after seeing the Tim Tebow pro life ad that was supposed to be so controversial and offensive according to all the pro choice organizations…before it even aired! It was so tame, I don’t see how it could have offended anyone, and frankly I don’t think I would’ve even known it was a pro life ad without the big pre-air fuss.
But anywho… that was a quick recap of my Super Bowl experience, now here’s a quick recap of this week’s postings.
Review: KrissX
Crossword puzzles and word jumbles fuse together in KrissX (pronounced “criss-cross”), Konami’s new puzzle game for Xbox Live Arcade and PC/Mac, and Wordsworth the Owl needs you to help him on his un-jumbling adventure!
KrissX’s main quest mode consists of 150 different word puzzles (though technically the mode is endless as it continues generating random puzzles after the 150 mark, and there are special bonus modes to unlock like time attack and so on), the majority of which are a clever hybrid of the two popular word games commonly found in magazines and daily newspapers. Rows and columns are laid out on the screen in the format of a crossword puzzle, only all the blocks are already filled in with letters. However, like a word jumble, all the letters are scrambled out of order, and, using the provided synonym/antonym tip words for each line, you must rearrange the letters to form the correct word and fill in the entire crossword grid.

Splinter Cell: Conviction’s New Ship Date Set in Stone, Literally

Oft-delayed Splinter Cell: Conviction has another new ship date, this one absolutely, positively 100% final with Ubisoft going so far as to engrave the date into a real stone. Per Ubisoft’s magic launch date stone, Splinter Cell: Conviction is now scheduled to ship in North America on April 13th (Europe and Australia get it on April 15th, and UK the 16th).
Honestly, though, I still won’t believe it’s final until April 13th passes and the game really does ship. Sorry to be a pessimist, but the game has been delayed far too many times already and I’m tired of getting my hopes up just to be dashed.

Fallout: New Vegas Confirmed for Fall 2010
The Obsidian Entertainment-developed Fallout: New Vegas is officially on for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 release this fall, Bethesda Softworks confirmed this morning. However, beyond the obvious fact that the game will take place in Vegas and will contain the series’ usual mix of “action, humor, and post-apocalyptic grime and grit,” there still aren’t many details to go on. Even this debut teaser trailer, as enticing as it may be, does nothing more than reaffirm the above.
Last Rebellion’s Unique Combat System in Action
NIS America dropped in on the PlayStation blog today to chat about its upcoming PS3 JRPG Last Rebellion, which will ship on February 23rd. The game’s combat system was the main topic of discussion, and the first gameplay footage of said combat system was posted in accompaniment to the written overview. Classic turn-based JRPG fundamentals feature prominently, but there also appear to be quite a few unique touches that jazz things up a bit. The PS3 certainly needs more good RPGs, so I’m intrigued. See what you think.

505 Games Unleashes The Swarm on Xbox 360

505 Games and Buka Studios have announced a new Xbox 360 exclusive called The Swarm.
Scheduled for release in May, The Swarm is a third-person shooter set in Moscow, Russia where aliens have invaded and a nuclear catastrophe has left the city blanketed in fallout. In a nod to Gas Powered Games’ PC action-RPG Space Siege, The Swarm will let you choose how to progress your character through the game — absorb alien DNA to unlock more powerful abilities at the cost of eventually mutating into an alien monstrosity, or maintain your humanity, fight back the alien menace and help find the antidote to cure your allies of mutation.
3D Dot Game Heroes “Natural Sword Enhancement” Trailer
The only thing missing from this new trailer for 3D Dot Game Heroes are two old, blocky farts sitting in bathtubs holding hands at the end. Watch and you’ll know exactly what I mean.
Disclaimer: If your sword remains erect for longer than four hours after watching this trailer, please consult with Dotnia’s blacksmith for assistance.
