Last November we posted an article about efforts to transform The Ocarina of Time into something more along the lines of A Link to the Past complete with 16-bit graphics and all the trimmings.
Tonight I noticed this article over at Kotaku notifying readers that Richard (aka Dampe), the creator of the 2-D project, perished Friday night in a tragic automobile accident. The family has requested that the site hosting the 2-D Ocarina of Time project be taken down.
What Richard (Dampe) was doing might have seemed trivial, but just like everyone else on this site he loved games and I’m sure that his efforts in converting one great game into the format of another was not being overlooked by gaming studios. Condolences may be left here on the forums of the project’s sister site.
Super tragic. I just got done looking at the trailer you guys had posted, and it seems like he was a brilliant mind, and that he’d made lots of progress. Ashame that it seems as if bright lights are blown out the quickest.
Wait…they asked that the site be taken DOWN?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! It’s the only way I’ll even PLAY Ocarina of Time, as I never liked the N64 game of it! NOW, I CAN’T EVEN GET IT AT ALL?!?!?! I mean, in the guy’s memory, I would at least keep it up there. I think it would be even cooler if Nintendo were to pick it up and make it available via their Virtual Console, and the money from it would go to either a charity or even some kind of college fund for his kids (if he had any) or something! I mean, shit, that would be a nice college fund for your kids!!!
He will be missed…
Alright, now that I’ve gone to the forums and such…I understand the guy was only 16 when he passed. A damn shame, and from the gameplay footage, he was well on his way to being in an industry he loved. I will say that, after reading the posts, he had a lot of love around him.
At the same time, the guy was obviously into his Zelda…I mean, check out his user name “Dampe”. Seriously…it’s a damn shame that the family is killing the project. If I were him, I’d be pissed.
It kind of reminds me of the Serenity Now raid on WoW. A lot of people were pissed off about that, and sure, they acted like assholes about it when they raided. But me personally, if I were to have an in-game funeral in a CONTESTED territory on a PVP server and NO ONE RAIDED ME…I’D BE PISSED!!!
