With the release of the playable demo for Clive Barker’s Jericho, today is a big day for anyone like me who has been eyeballing the title from afar for a while now intrigued by the premise behind the game and impressed by the style of it while at the same time having no earthly idea what it looks like in motion or how it’s actually supposed to play. Now available for download on the PC from the game’s official website, on the PS3 in the PlayStation Store and on the Xbox 360 via the Xbox Live Marketplace, the Jericho demo provides a playable sample of three members of the Jericho Squad:

Thrusting into the middle of this unique horror/FPS, the Clive Barker’s Jericho demo starts gamers off in the Crusades time slice of Al-Khali’s past. A vicious attack has cut the squad in half, leaving players in control of Sgt. Frank Delgado, Lt. Abigail Black and Sgt. Billie Church, and with the other half of the squad presumed lost. As the spirit of Cpt. Devin Ross, the fallen squad leader who’s remaining entity is able to possess and jump between surviving members of the team, players will take advantage of Delgado, Black and Church’s special weapons and paranormal talents.

In between sessions of Warhawk and Heavenly Sword tonight, I fired the PS3 demo up for a quick once-through, and it didn’t disappoint as far as I’m concerned. So far I’m especially liking how the squad mechanics work, the way in which the context-sensitive action sequences are implemented and the varying weapon choices and play styles offered by each team member. Unfortunately, though, the demo is too short to really gauge the depth of how using each character’s unique talents will ultimately factor into making it through the game, but from what is shown I see a lot of potential for one hell of an engaging horror/FPS experience come October 23rd.

Haven’t been able to try the demo for yourself yet? Check out these new screenshots for a peek at what you’re missing.
