Dying Light Devs Put Fantasy Slasher Hellraid “On Hold”

Hellraid

Dying Light has proven to be a great success for Techland, but those good vibes apparently didn’t rub off on Hellraid, the other game the studio has been working on with the expectation of a 2015 launch.

Sadly, the dark fantasy first-person hack ‘n’ slasher will no longer be out this year. Even worse, the future of the project sounds like it might be heading toward outright cancellation, as Techland says it has put development “on hold” and taken the game “back to the drawing board,” while simultaneously shifting focus to develop more within the Dying Light franchise.

In other words, Techland knows it can make a buttload more money making Dying Light DLC and inevitably a sequel. Like it or not, zombie games sell, so from a business perspective this move makes sense. It’s just sad because, personally, Hellraid has always grabbed my interest more than Dying Light. Hopefully it will reemerge better than ever somewhere down the line. Or maybe, given its origins as an internal Dead Island mod, the game will be transformed back into some weird form of Dying Light expansion. Only time will tell.

Hellraid‘s Steam page is still live for the moment, but who knows for how long. It seems possible that Android and iOS puzzle-solving exploration game Hellraid: The Escape may be the only Hellraid game we’ll ever get to play.

Here’s Techland’s official statement in full, per the Hellraid blog:

Dear Hellraid fans,

We would like to officially announce that our dark fantasy FPP game Hellraid will not be released this year as previously planned, and the development of the game has been put on hold.

In the recent months we conducted an internal analysis and came to the conclusion that Hellraid, in its current shape and form, is not meeting our own expectations for this project. Therefore, we decided the best course of action would be to send it back to the drawing board and invent our dark fantasy title anew.

In the meantime, we will consolidate our development resources and focus on further expansion of our Dying Light franchise.

We wish to thank all our fans for your support – you’re the best!
