[E3 2009] Sony’s E3 Press Conference Recap

Project TRICO is real! Actually, it’s officially called The Last Guardian, and has been tweaked around a bit in terms of graphics from that leaked video. Anyway, just had to get that off my chest. The Sony E3 presser just ended and was packed with cool stuff like The Last Guardian, the expected PSP Go announcement, God of War 3, Uncharted 2 and Assassin’s Creed 2 sweetness, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for PSP and a surprise unveil of Final Fantasy XIV exclusively for PS3 (it appears to be an online sequel to FFXI). Of course, Sony also took time out to surprise everyone with a motion control device of its own that combines functionality with the existing PlayStation Eye. Yet another motion control gimmick, but some actual gameplay applications were tech demoed for RTS and FPS gameplay styles rather than virtual friends.

More rambling after this.

Conference start with PS2, PS3 and PSP montage. God of War, Army of Two, White Knight Chronicles, LBP, Buzz, Bayonetta, Ratchet & Clank, SingStar, Call of Juarez, FFXIII…pretty much every known first and third-party game shown at some point in there.

Jack Tretton on the stage, jokes about all the press leaks. 364 games coming to PlayStation platforms this year. “Ton of live code” to be shown. Sounds good!

Modern Warfare 2, FFXIII, R&C Future: Crack in Time, B: AA, Heavy Rain, Rock Band Beatles are name dropped.

Presentation start with PS2. Sony committed to system as long as customers demand it, even beyond the planned 10-year cycle. Over 100 new titles coming to PS2 this year.

Now he’s on to sales and corporate speak. Don’t care about this crap.

Plugs recently released PS3 game inFamous. “This summer’s biggest blockbuster.” One of 35 PS3 exclusives you’ll only get on PS3 this year.

Naughty Dog’s Evan Wells come on to show Uncharted 2. Multiplayer beta starts at midnight. Demo will show off the single-player campaign. Gameplay video starts up. Looks absolutely amazing. Breathtaking city and mountain scenery. Level of Nate and his female partner fleeing a helicopter, blows up the building as they work down. Gameplay still very similar to first game, but the level of scale and graphical detail has been upped even higher.

MAG is up next. First public unveiling of live 256-player gameplay. Eight Zipper players come on to demo. Raven assault on fuel depot. A large scale SOCOM/Battlefield type of experience. Not too exciting, but it’s really not my type of game. Coming out this fall.

Switches topics to PSP. Is this going to be the PSP Go unveil? Not yet. Just talk on the different Dissidia, Rock Band, Assassin’s Creed and Hannah Montana Entertainment Packs.

Now it’s the PSP Go. Jokes about the PSP Go being the “worst kept secret of E3.” Will not replace PSP-3000 or UMD. Just an alternative built specifically for digital users. All the same specs as revealed before. Today marks launch of Media Go, replaces Media Manager as PC-to-PSP management software. Sense Me software coming to enhance music playback. PSP toolkits being dropped 80% in price to enable even more developers to bring more new content to PSP at affordable prices. Future PSP games will be released on both UMD and PSN download. That’s all I wanted to hear!

PSP Go will come October 1st for $249.99. Expected a price equal or possibly cheaper than the 3000, so that sucks. PSP Go coming November in Japan.

Video delivery service up next. Starting today service will be available on PSP. Download videos directly to PSP. Will also launch new content from G4, Showtime, E! and various other programs.

Polyphony Digital’s Kazunouri Yamauchi comes out to unveil the long-awaited Gran Turismo PSP. Wow, the PSP Go looks so small in his hands! GT PSP will have 800 cars and 35 tracks with tons of alternate layouts for those tracks. Single-player mode with all the usual races, time trials, etc. Full-sized GT experience. Ad hoc four player mode confirmed. Another PSP-specific feature: share cars with friends. First video is presented: it’s obviously all CG. Game will be out October 1st to go with launch of the Go.

New stuff from Metal Gear Solid family!!! Kojima is here! Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker confirmed for PSP. Setting is 10 years after MGS3; 1970’s. A true MGS sequel. Kojima writing script and producing. Main MGS4 team working on game. “Not a spin-off or side story.” Excellent news! Here’s the trailer… 1974 in Costa Rica. Holy cow, this looks absolutely stunning! Environments seem more open than Portable Ops. Game launching in 2010.

More good PSP news concerning Resident Evil. Whole new RE game coming next year exclusively to PSP! Montage rolls of upcoming PSP games: LBP, new Jak & Daxter, MotorStorm, Dissidia, SOCOM, Monster Hunter, Soul Caliber, Persona, etc. Damn, there’s a lot of sweet stuff coming to PSP!

Now it’s on to PlayStation Network. Today marks launch of FFVII as a PSOne classic for PSP/PS3 download. Stuff about Home, not much interested in this.

“2009 all about content on PS3.” Montage plays showing all the upcoming PS3 content: Uncharted 2, inFamous, Madden, FFXIII, MAG, Batman: AA, White Knight Chronicles, Ghostbusters, Ninja Gaiden 2, Buzz!, Tekken 6, Heavy Rain, Fat Princess, BioShock 2, God of War 3, etc. Long damn video.

New property coming from Rockstar North exclusive to PS3. It’s called Agent. Shadowy world of spies and espionage set in 1970’s. Nothing shown for it other than title.

Ubisoft comes out to show off Assassin’s Creed 2 on PS3. All about “diversity.” More options in all areas of the game. Picks up where original left off. Experience Italian Renaissance. Character isn’t an assassin at first, but you learn to become one over the course of the game. Gain invented machines and weapons. New flying machine shown, looks awesome! Double hidden blade kill, sick! AI actually sees when you dive into hay bails! Over 30 different weapons. Play Assassin’s Creed Bloodlines on PSP to unlock new weapons in PS3 game. Wow, very impressed with this. Game is coming to PS3 and PSP this holiday season.

New FFXIII trailer shown, more beautiful CG. Also some new gameplay action towards the end.

First footage of Final Fantasy XIV, wha!? Launches in 2010 only for PS3!!! Looks more in the traditional fantasy style like FFXI and XII. It’s a new online game following up on FFXI. Interesting…

Uh oh, Jack starts talking about motion control stuff, please no! Engineering prototype shown…looks like a wand with a glowing sphere on end. PlayStation Eye can track the glowing globe in true 1-to-1 motion. What are you doing with this Sony!? Actually looks more fun than the 360 Natal with more actual gameplay applications shown, but still so damn gimmicky. Launch scheduled for spring 2010. No name.

LittleBigPlanet takes center stage. Disney SackBoy costumes coming like Jack Sparrow.

New franchise coming from United Front Games. Mod Nation Racers. Same “Play, Create, Share” tagline as LBP. Another kart racer, seems like Microsoft’s new Joy Ride. Interface looks similar to LBP. Create tracks. Pretty neat. Game coming in 2010.

Sneak peek at another game. It’s the Team ICO game. It’s called The Last Guardian, which is the Project TRICO shown in the leaked video. Hell yeah! Graphical quality looks even better than leaked footage!!! I’m getting goosebumps right about now! Very different trailer than the leaked one, shows much more and the boy and creature designs are a bit different. Unbelievable!

Now a short teaser for Gran Turismo 5, the real thing. Just a teaser, nothing too special here.

And now another big franchise…first few minutes of God of War 3 gameplay. Live demo played. Holy shit, graphics are spectacular! Game coming in March 2010, so no release this year. Bummer.
