E3 2014: 10 Ubisoft Studios Have a Hand in the Development of Assassin’s Creed: Unity


Ubisoft, you sexist pigs. How dare you make a game with cooperative multiplayer that doesn’t offer a female playable character!

In case you couldn’t pick up on it, that previous statement was made with every ounce of sarcasm I could muster. By now I’m sure you’ve heard about all the uproar that’s been drummed up against Ubisoft for not having a female character in the newly revealed co-op mode for Assassin’s Creed: Unity. Sorry, I just find it silly how easily offended everyone is these days, and how quickly the angry social media mob and activist “journalists” are to hammer people down. With so many serious problems and injustices in the world today, including real cases of sexism and racism (like the Donald Sterling situation), getting outraged at developers for not representing every race, ethnicity, religious group, sexual orientation/preference or what have you in their games is taking things a bit far if you ask me. I look to games for fun and escapism, not a reflection of human society. But I guess that’s just me.

Anyway… Sorry to start off on a bit of a rant. I just had to get that off my chest. That’s my social commentary for a while. I’ll shut up about the matter now. I’m actually here to talk about positive things, because chauvinistic as some might believe it to be, Assassin’s Creed: Unity is looking really damn impressive, and it’s been sad to see such phony controversy tarnish its showing at E3.


In addition to an array of video and still-images assets, all of which can be viewed underneath this wall of text, one of the neat things tucked away inside Ubisoft’s E3 press kit is the graphic pictured above describing the collaborative effort between Ubisoft’s army of global studios. While Ubisoft Montreal is the showrunner, nine other studios are chipping in support for different areas of the game’s design. For example, the Annecy team is helping with social and online features, the Shanghai studio is pitching in assets for avatars, characters, environments and weapons, and Ubisoft Kiev is in charge of optimizing the PC version. Maybe I’m just a big geek, but I think it’s interesting to see a breakdown of the work being put into the game and just how much collaboration goes into a project of this magnitude.

The game itself appears to be everything you could ask for from a new-gen evolution of the Assassin’s Creed formula. I’m not particularly fond of the new high ground feature which clutters the screen with objective marker icons (a standard mini-map is just fine by me), but beyond that I like the additional mechanics Ubisoft has implemented. Controlled descent is especially awesome, as it finally gets rid of the tired haystack dive as the only means of getting from rooftops back to the ground. And what else can I say about the massive scale and activity of the angry mob AI that hasn’t already been said? Seeing so many characters behaving and reacting differently at the same time is one of those technology achievements that finally offers a clear distinction between the capabilities of this new console generation and the last.
