Final Fantasy IX Finally Coming to PSN

Hey, look! A PSOne Classic that is actually a real classic is coming to the PlayStation Network!

Following up on the successful re-releases of Final Fantasy VII and VIII, Square Enix has confirmed today that Final Fantasy IX is “coming soon” to the US PSN store. A specific date is still forthcoming, but the Japanese release date is reportedly May 20, so a US release around that time seems likely.

Once it does launch — whenever that may be — PS3 and PSP owners alike will be able to download the most consistently overlooked game in the entire franchise. I have a hard time fingering just one Final Fantasy as a favorite, but if I was forced to choose it’d be a close call between VII and IX. IX is great because it really goes back to the roots of the franchise with whimsical characters and a true fantasy setting, as opposed to the more angsty, futuristic style the series has adopted since the dawn of the PSOne era.

Will report back once Square Enix confirms a release date.
