Final Fantasy XIII Gives Trophies Purpose

This is probably old news to many of you, but I just discovered it for myself last night.

By earning the more prestigious Trophies in the PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIII, you can unlock a set of seven XMB themes — one for each of the main characters. I recently completed the Gold “Lore Master” Trophy for fully identifying 100 different creatures with the Libra technique, and then last night when I turned the game on I noticed that a new “Extras” category had appeared in the main menu since the last time I played. Curious about where that came from all of a sudden, I took a closer look and saw that for earning that Gold Trophy I had unlocked a Sazh theme (using the same art as the image above, only mirrored) to decorate my PS3’s XMB with. Nice!

I’m already an admitted Trophy whore, so obviously I love this. But even those of you who just don’t get the appeal of Trophies (and Achievements) must admit this is a clever way to incentivize Trophy hunting beyond mere personal gratification and gamer penis measuring. I hope other developers take a look at what Square Enix did here and incorporate the idea into future PS3 releases.
