PS3 firmware update 2.40 has gone live today right on schedule, and as expected the PlayStation forums were set ablaze this morning with posters claiming the update killed off their systems. The stories may be true and they may not be, but personally I’m skeptical of it all. These stories always seem to come up around firmware updates and who could forget all the ludicrous claims of certain games causing Xbox 360s to die. Lock ups and performance issues I can understand (and usually expect), but actual console death, I just don’t see a software update being responsible. It’s all just coincidental if you ask me, but hey, I could be wrong. Firmware 2.40 could in fact be causing some consoles to crash and burn, I simply don’t know.
For me, though, all has gone smoothly. I just finished updating my PS3 a few minutes ago and haven’t suffered any bugs, glitches, lockups or crashes. The in-game XMB pulls up just like it should and the new Trophy system seems to be in working order (though the new profile cards load a little on the slow side, hopefully that peps up).
So how’s the update process been for you?
Apparently it isn’t isolated shrieking forum hysteria – http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/02/sony-responds-to-adverse-firmware-2-40-effects/
Sony pulled the update to look into problems.
I just started reading about that as well. But I don’t know, the update didn’t give me any problems, thankfully. It’ll be interesting to hear what caused all this, if Sony ever explains it
Here’s Sony’s official word on the matter:

Sony hasn’t done very well lately – they put out the do-nothing 4.00 patch for the PSP only to up it to 4.01 within a few days … and now this.
It is interesting to me as mostly a PC gamer to see all of these issues folks have used to taunt PC gamers with happening to consoles as well …
