Hey there, football fans. The NFL season is coming, and I just know you are chomping at the bit to get back to consuming pigskin every Sunday afternoon (and Sunday and Monday nights, and sometimes Thursday nights, too). How would you like to watch every out-of-market Sunday NFL game from your PS3? Now you can!
Sony has teamed up with DIRECTV to bring the NFL Sunday Ticket subscription service to the PS3 this coming season. Signing up will overload you with up to 14 NFL games every Sunday–each available in full HD–and get you access to DIRECTV’s Red Zone Channel, which “brings you the final yards of every scoring drive on one dedicated channel.”
That’s great news, right? Well… Yes. Kinda. Sorta. Maybe. Depending on how deep your pockets are.
You see, subscribing for the full season of NFL Sunday Ticket will cost you the tidy sum of $339.95. That’s just five bucks more than the service costs DIRECTV users. However, with the PS3 price now dropping down to $250, that means you’ll have to pay nearly $100 more than the console itself, just to watch a lot of football for one season. Making matters worse, DIRECTV is currently offering new customers NFL Sunday Ticket at no extra charge. The timing of that promotion just seems so cruel.
Existing DIRECTV customers don’t have it so bad at least. If you’re already a subscriber, you can pay an additional $50 to add the service to your PS3 and turn your console into an extra DIRECTV satellite receiver for your home. That’s nifty!
NFL Sunday Ticket is a fantastic service. My best friend raves about it every season, and tells me I’m totally missing out by not subscribing. But as cool as it is to see such a service expanding onto PS3, it is very much a luxury, and with the economy still in the toilet I wish they could have come up with a more approachable subscription fee.
What do you think? Are you willing to pay such an exorbitant price to get NFL on your PS3? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
