PlayStation Store Update [PlayStation.Blog]
Two thoughts:
– Wow … nearly all of the minis are things I have on my iPod Touch … and paid half the price for!
– All the other games are still too expensive. Except NIS – you can’t get Prinny for that little even on eBay!
No real surprises on pricing that I see, just average PSP game prices. Outside of the brand new games like GT, Beaterator, Soulcalibur and so on, there are a lot of games on here that are cheaper than they are on UMD. $15-20 is the average price point on a lot of these, I think that’s pretty damn good for full PSP games.
If you’re going to go by used or eBay prices obviously they are going to seem expensive though 🙂
I would call everything but NIS ‘parity’. If you hit Target or Walmart or BestBuy, you will see some that are on the list for $15 priced at $20, but you will also see the opposite, and some of the $30 are priced at $20 and so on.
The other thing is that most of these games are *old*. … sure I know that Apple’s chart indicates that getting a list of 100 games means more than 15% of the entire PSP library … but paying $20 for a *one time use* digital copy of a 4 year old game … well, it just has less inherent value.
And that is what is killing people I talk to – I bought the UMD version of IL-2 Sturmovik on a whim when it came out, and I had fun and so have my kids. But if they didn’t like it (my older son has taken possession), it would already have been traded out to recoup maximum value. Buying a game on PSN means that the money is gone – and of course, that is really the point, isn’t it? Publishers would be happy if they never had to see the word ‘used’, if they could walk by used book & CD shops and laugh and say ‘we don’t have THAT problem!’
But I think there will be a backlash because while folks don’t mind paying $5 for DLC, it is another thing to look at paying the same $40 for a digital copy that is locked to their account as for a UMD that comes with a manual and the ability to loan to friends and so on.
