Do you find gaming trends and statistics to be an interesting topic? If you do Xfire has a new feature in store that you might enjoy.
Xfire is a free instant messenger that lets people communicate with each other. Its uniqueness lies in its ability to detect what game a particular contact is running. Recently the people behind Xfire have started to publish statistics from its large user base.
The latest statistics show a large increase in World of Warcraft (WoW) play as well as ‘free to play’ MMOs such as Maple Story and Silk Road Online. Each day in February Xfire users logged 430,000 man hours per day playing WoW.
Xfire’s latest top 10 list:
1 World of Warcraft
2 Counter-Strike Source
3 Call of Duty 2 Multiplayer
4 Battlefield
5 Guild Wars
6 Counter-Strike
7 Silkroad Online
8 Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
9 Warcraft III – The Frozen Throne
10 Battlefield

Wolfenstein? Seriously? That game sucks so bad, though! LOL They must be some 12 year olds or something. As for the list itself…I can honestly say that at Lansharx (the gaming center I work at, http://www.lansharx.com), here’s the list of top games:
1. World of Warcraft
2. Battlefield 2 (includes expansion)
3. Command & Conquer 3
4. LOTR: Battle for Middle-Earth II
5. Supreme Commander
Honestly, I don’t see a lot of CoD guys coming in, and we don’t carry Counter-Strike because Valve are dicks about licensing fees. Regardless, we don’t get many people that want to play CS, so not a big problem.
I was surprised that C&C 3 was not in the top 3 myself. I am really liking that game a lot.
As for the demographics of Xfire users I am not sure. I still enjoy a good game of CS though 🙂
