Tearaway meets Hero Quest.
That was my immediate thought after watching the trailer for Popup Dungeon, a papercraft roguelike dungeon crawler from Triple.B.Titles. I love Tearaway, I grew up on the board game Hero Quest, and I can never get enough dungeon crawlers, so this game is ticking all the right boxes for me. Triple B actually likens the game to a mix of turn-based RPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics and X-Com with Dungeons & Dragons board games. That combination is just as exciting.
After achieving previous Kickstarter success with Ring Runner: Flight of the Sages and actually following through with a well-received launch on Steam, Triple B is going the crowd funding route once again for Popup Dungeon, which is being developed first for PC/Mac/Linux with the potential for a mobile version on Android and iOS if certain stretch goals are met. The game’s Kickstarter campaign is just getting off the ground, raising just under $5k in the early going on the way toward a minimum funding goal of $80,000 with 43 days still to go.
Popup Dungeon‘s main selling point is its papercraft theme, not just visually, but as a form of arts and crafts user customization. The game will offer a downloadable papercraft template (pictured below) that players, if they so choose, will be able to use to create any hero they desire and then watch fold together into a cute, paper figure in the game. Preset heroes will be provided for those who aren’t artistically inclined to make their own, including characters like Box Cat, Pony Princess, Space Marine, Internet Troll and more standard fantasy archetypes like Wizard, Rogue and Paladin.
Here are the other key features as highlighted on the Kickstarter page:
• Roguelike: permanent death, quick gains, procedural dungeons
• Tactical Turn-Based RPG: fast-paced, strategic game play
• Infinitely Extensible: Users can easily create: weapons, abilities, characters, and enemies.
• Papercraft: We hand-fold every pixel to ensure every dungeon is fresh and lively for you!
• Multiplayer: Hot Seat or Online Coop (Versus mode is a Stretch Goal)
• Flexible Party Size: Dungeon Crawl alone or with a party
• Variable Challenges: Choose the dungeon crawl that’s right for your schedule, from single-seaters to infinite descents.
• Persistent Gains: Charms awarded by The Wizard after a run are permanent and give every character under your control a bonus. They are quite magical. Collect and combine them to achieve curious effects.
• Experienced Team: Made by Triple.B.Titles, an independent studio that has previously taken a game from Kickstarter to Steam.
And here is the trailer I mentioned earlier. It may just be the most epic video game trailer you see all year. Watch it!
