Outlast, the absolutely frightening survival horror game from indie studio Red Barrels, today has been confirmed for a September 4th PC launch via Steam digital download for $19.99. A PlayStation 4 version is also in the works, but won’t be available until early 2014.
Miles Upshur is the protagonist of Outlast, an investigative reporter who is led to the Mount Massive Asylum by an inside source’s tip and stumbles onto a gruesome crime scene and a terrifying secret. If you have steady nerves and a strong stomach, you’ll get your chance to help Miles escape and survive the realm of the mentally insane in a little more than a month’s time from now.
The new in-game stills on this page are plenty creepy, but if you’re in the mood for a good scare, hit play on the game’s full trailer below. Just make sure to turn the lights off and either strap on a pair of headphones or jack up the surround sound so your senses can fully absorb the immersive, richly detailed atmosphere. Miles’ shaky breathing alone is enough to give you the willies.
