Red Faction Breaks Into the Car Combat Genre

Firing off an early announcement leading up to German trade show Gamescom, THQ today confirmed the development of rumored PSN and XBLA download title Red Faction: Battlegrounds. And if you’ve been playing Red Faction games since the beginning, you’re in for a bit of a surprise with this one.

Breaking free from the first- and third-person shooter gameplay of the previous Red Faction outings, Battlegrounds brings the series into a completely unexpected genre: vehicular combat!

Battlegrounds‘ central focus will be on four-player offline/online battles in play modes such as Survival, Annihilate and Flag Frenzy, and in typical Red Faction fashion, mass environmental destruction will play a prominent role in the action. The game’s ranking system will also tie into the next true Red Faction game in the form of unlocked bonus content playable in Red Faction: Armageddon, which ships in March for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Red Faction: Battlegrounds, the first downloadable title in franchise history, explodes onto PSN and XBLA sometime early next year. Now feast your eyes on the first trailer and screenshots.
