Resident Evil Pair Announced for Wii

Confirming the rumors and speculation that have been floating around recently regarding Resident Evil‘s future presence on the Wii, Capcom has officially announced today two RE titles for Nintendo’s hot new console, including Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition and Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles.

Resident Evil has become one of the premier franchises in the games industry, with more than 30 million RE games sold around the world,” said Jack Symon, director, product marketing, Capcom Entertainment. “The innovative controller functionality of the Wii will allow us to design innovative, original game play never before seen in a Resident Evil game. With RE4, we’re challenging the Wii hardware to meet Resident Evil, while in The Umbrella Chronicles, we’re adapting Resident Evil to the innovations of the Wii.”

Adapting to take advantage of the Wii’s motion-sensing controls, Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition brings back the award-winning GameCube and PS2 classic from 2005 and packs in new Wii-mote support to enable players to knife slash, aim and fire guns, reload, dodge attacks, and complete the various action sequences all using intuitive controller gestures. Nintendo fans who were disappointed by missing out on the cool extras the PS2 version received over the GameCube should be happy to hear that all of the bonus content will be packed into this Wii version as well.

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, on the other hand, is a brand new installment in the acclaimed franchise that will explore the back story behind the Umbrella Corporation’s demise. The gameplay will fuse together typical RE action with first-person, light-gun style shooting and take players through classic locales from Resident Evil 0, 1, 2 and 3 and the all-new Umbrella stronghold, with multiple paths through the game for high replayability. Past RE stars Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine will be making their return, as are other classic characters like Rebecca Chambers and Carlos Oliveira.

Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition is slated to ship this summer, while Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles‘ release date is still yet to be determined. We’ll be back as soon as any new details emerge, but for now we’ll leave you with the debut screenshot and artwork for both titles (continue reading for the galleries).
