Review: Alien Blobs

Portable gaming systems are the perfect place for puzzle games of all types, and the iPhone is no exception. Alien Blobs is an action-packed puzzle game that provides loads of addictive fun and makes use of the iPhone’s touch screen and accelerometer. There is a free version ‘Alien Blobs Lite’ available, so I recommend that you go right ahead and give it a download if the review intrigues you!

Puzzle games fall into two main types: either you are just dumped into the puzzle, or you are given a small taste of a story before being dumped into the puzzle (yeah, I know, there is also Puzzle Quest, but that is an extreme rarity). Alien Blobs falls into the latter category: you are told that a group of scientists have inadvertently opened a portal that has allowed an alien creature in the form of a ‘blob’ to enter our dimension, and has in turn spawned more portals that are allowing more aliens to enter.

You play as Alice, the daughter of one of the scientists, who takes her father’s prototype ‘weapon’ that can wipe out the alien blobs and seal up the portals. This consists of being attached to the center of the portal by a tow wire, and then zipping around the edge of the portal shooting colored ‘anti-blobs’ that will combine with the aliens and explode. There are plenty of special blobs that will produce combo effects, and a large number of power-ups you can use for offense or defense to help you defeat all of the aliens and clear the level.

The balance between pushing through levels, getting snippets of story, and changing portals works very well and will keep you engaged for quite a while. This game – especially for the budget price of $3.99 – would easily rate a ‘Buy It’ it there wasn’t a trial version. But since there is, I recommend you download the trial, discover how fun it is, THEN buy it!
