Today is the day Smash Bros. fans have been waiting for. In the latest Smash Bros. Dojo!! update, online play for Super Smash Bros. Brawl has been confirmed and detailed. While that is fantastic news, things aren’t all hunky-dory, unfortunately. Online play will come in two modes: With Friends and With Anyone. Playing with friends is the main mode of play, featuring the ability to check player status and communicate during battle using four pre-set messages mapped to the D-pad. The drawback is that the annoying friend code system is in place, so you’ll have to exchange codes and build up a friends list before being able to play. If you don’t have or can’t find many friends to hook up with, the With Anyone mode will let you play with random players. Sadly, though, the communication and stat-tracking features won’t be available when playing strangers, which is kinda lame. Overall, it’s great to hear Brawl will be online, but at the same time it’s frustrating to see the friend code system still in place — Nintendo needs to get rid of it already!
