Fresh off of being unveiled as the first title under Namco Bandai’s new SURGE publishing label, Afro Samurai has now received its final box art, complete with fancy SURGE logo in the bottom right corner. That’s one spiffy cover shot, don’t you agree? Should definitely stand out on the shelf come January 27th.

Namco Bandai SURGEs Ahead in 2009

Namco Bandai Games America has formed a new studio/publishing label today known as SURGE. SURGE is a Western-focused studio “dedicated to providing cutting-edge, genre-defining games” across all genres and platforms.

“SURGE presents a significant milestone for NAMCO BANDAI as it personifies our commitment to deliver compelling content for the discriminating player who is looking for games that are not only groundbreaking but also push the envelope,” said Andrew Lelchuk, executive vice president of sales and marketing at NAMCO BANDAI Games America, Inc. “Through passion and innovation, SURGE will complement our portfolio of established franchises and intellectual property while positioning the company as a creative force.”

Hip hop anime hack-n-slash Afro Samurai will be the first title published under the new SURGE label when it ships January 27th, 2009 for PS3 and Xbox 360. More SURGE-branded titles are in development for next year, but those will be revealed at a later date.

Good news and bad news to report on the Afro Samurai front. Good news is the anime hack-n-slash continues to look and sound quite stylish and a heck of a lot of fun, as you can see for yourself in the new trailer and gallery posted underneath. But the bad news is the title won’t be gracing PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers with its presence this fall as originally scheduled. Now it won’t be shipping until early ’09. That’s probably for the better, though. A game like this would surely just get lost in the holiday blockbuster release season, and that would be a shame.

Namco Bandai Editor’s Day 08: Afro Samurai Trailer and Gallery

Now here’s an unexpectedly cool title Namco Bandai has coming up this fall for PS3 and X360. Based on Samuel L. Jackson’s animated series, Afro Samurai is a “hip hop infused” action/adventure game that marries modern hip hop with Japanese culture, rendered in a slick animated art style. Samuel L. Jackson is lending his VO talents to the project, and RZA from the Wu-Tang Clan is producing the soundtrack.
