Way up in the clear, blue skies above the world of Cars, Dusty the crop duster and his aircraft pals have their own high-flying adventures to share in Disney’s Planes, soaring into theaters August 9th. Timed up for the theatrical release, Disney Interactive’s tie-in video game is due for take off exclusively on Nintendo platforms (3DS, DS, Wii, Wii U) on August 6th.

When Disney Interactive ships its licensed video game tie-in for Planes, the animated feature film set in the skies of the Cars universe, you’re gonna need a Nintendo platform to play it on.

Yep, Planes, the video game, is Nintendo exclusive, taking flight August 6th — that’s three days ahead of the movie’s August 9th theatrical release — on Wii, Wii U, 3DS and DS. Personal Computer users, mobile device gamers, and Sony and Microsoft system owners are S.O.L. I’m afraid.

Voiced by Dane Cook, Dusty the loveable crop duster is the ace pilot of Planes. The video game will expand upon Dusty’s storyline in a high-flying adventure of air races, objective-based missions and balloon pop mini-games spanning global locales inspired by those from the movie. Footage of the game isn’t available yet, but from the early screenshots I’m sort of detecting a Pilotwings vibe (especially the 3DS version).

All versions of Planes will share a narrative driven campaign and the Balloon Pop mode, but after that the features differ slightly between consoles and handhelds. On Wii/Wii U, the game will offer 10 playable characters and 10 environments while the 3DS/DS versions will be limited to only six of each. The console versions will additionally offer exclusive access to two-player drop-in/drop-out races as well as the Free Flight and Air Rallies modes. A Challenge mode with over 40 missions will only be available on the handhelds.
