Indie studio Fenix Fire has launched a Kickstarter campaign for its latest project, a game by the name of Source, which is also appearing at the Indie Megabooth this weekend during PAX East.
Why should you care about Source? Well, for one it looks absolutely spectacular, sorta like a blend of Metroid, Panzer Dragoon and Tron. Officially, it is described as an arcade action-adventure game, in which you will control a firefly creature as it travels between light and dark dimensions of a mysterious and surreal world in order to discover the source of a dark energy that is corrupting the once idyllic environment.
Inspired by the birth of their son, the husband-wife development team is designing Source to capture the wonder and act of discovery that a newborn child experiences. The game’s main gameplay hook involves gathering and releasing different forms of constantly depleting energy, enabling the firefly to pollinate cocoons, lift objects, shoot blasts of energy and interact with plants and creatures in a variety of other ways.
One of the other intriguing features in Source is its death mechanic. Upon death, the firefly with re-hatch from a cocoon, sometimes in an evolved form equipped with new abilities and advanced powers. Basically, the character upgrade system is tied in with death and reincarnation, which is pretty gosh darn cool.
Source will also feature puzzle solving, real-time combat (including epic bosses), tons of secrets and hidden areas to discover, dynamic storytelling delivered through visual cues and character body language rather than dialogue, and more.
Originally conceptualized as an iPhone game, Source has evolved into a far more sophisticated game that Fenix Fire is now aiming to release on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One by August 2015.
