Indie studio Fenix Fire has launched a Kickstarter campaign for its latest project, a game by the name of Source, which is also appearing at the Indie Megabooth this weekend during PAX East.
Why should you care about Source? Well, for one it looks absolutely spectacular, sorta like a blend of Metroid, Panzer Dragoon and Tron. Officially, it is described as an arcade action-adventure game, in which you will control a firefly creature as it travels between light and dark dimensions of a mysterious and surreal world in order to discover the source of a dark energy that is corrupting the once idyllic environment.
Inspired by the birth of their son, the husband-wife development team is designing Source to capture the wonder and act of discovery that a newborn child experiences. The game’s main gameplay hook involves gathering and releasing different forms of constantly depleting energy, enabling the firefly to pollinate cocoons, lift objects, shoot blasts of energy and interact with plants and creatures in a variety of other ways.
One of the other intriguing features in Source is its death mechanic. Upon death, the firefly with re-hatch from a cocoon, sometimes in an evolved form equipped with new abilities and advanced powers. Basically, the character upgrade system is tied in with death and reincarnation, which is pretty gosh darn cool.
Source will also feature puzzle solving, real-time combat (including epic bosses), tons of secrets and hidden areas to discover, dynamic storytelling delivered through visual cues and character body language rather than dialogue, and more.
Originally conceptualized as an iPhone game, Source has evolved into a far more sophisticated game that Fenix Fire is now aiming to release on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One by August 2015.

August 31st through September 2nd. That’s when indie gaming officially takes over the world. OK, maybe not the entire world. More like PAX Prime going down in Seattle, Washington next weekend.
30 independent developers will be joining forces to show off more than 30 new games in a single location — the Indie Megabooth. Muah ha ha ha! Seriously, I feel like I should be doing the Dr. Evil finger-to-lip gesture after I say the words “Indie Megabooth.” It sounds so powerful and world dominating.
True to its name, the Megabooth will be the largest indie booth ever assembled (muah ha ha…whoops, sorry about that), bringing together so many developers from across the globe that it could theoretically transform into a 200 foot tall robot of indie gaming awesomeness.
We’ve already covered a few of the games attendees will be seeing on the show floor, including Toki Tori 2, Snapshot, Mark of the Ninja and Vessel (and soon we’ll have more on Guacamelee! in a Q&A with DrinkBox Studios), but that’s only scratching the surface. Click that sideways triangle you know as the Play button on the video below for a preview montage of all the different games scheduled to appear at the Megabooth.
