Last night during the pre-game show before the 2008 NBA Finals tipped off, 2K Sports officially unveiled Kevin Garnett as the cover athlete for NBA 2K9, which is due out this October for PS3, PS2 and Xbox 360 (I would’ve told you last night as well, but I was too busy, you know, actually watching the game). Clearly being named cover athlete fueled KG on as he led his Boston Celtics to a tough win over the LA Lakers in game one. OK, so it didn’t really have any impact on his performance, but that doesn’t mean “The Big Ticket” isn’t psyched about the honor. On the contrary, he’s actually as psyched as you’re ever going to see a cover athlete:
“NBA 2K is where it’s AT! End of story,” said Garnett, who is currently playing in the NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers. “It’s the game I play, the game my friends play, and the game anyone in the league serious about videogames plays. NBA 2K is the real deal, and until 2K Sports find a way to plant an elbow in your chest, it’s the closest thing to actually being there on the court. I can’t tell you how pumped I am to be on the cover of NBA 2K9 – it’s a real honor. Now watch out! Because this fall 2K Sports and I are going to deliver the best basketball video game out there, period.“

The folks at 2K Sports have already picked their cover athlete for NBA 2K9, but they aren’t ready to reveal which hardwood superstar they’ve chosen to the public just yet. Oh no, that wouldn’t be much fun at all. With the NBA playoffs in full swing, 2K Sports wants to spice up the cover athlete unveiling, and they’re doing so with a contest!
2K Sports will be revealing the NBA 2K9 cover athlete in a 30-second TV spot set to air during the pre-game show leading up to the first game of the 2008 NBA Finals, which tips off June 5th at 8:30 PM EST on ABC. But until then, 2K wants you to try to guess who the cover athlete will be. Simply dribble on over to the new NBA 2K9 community website, fill out a quick personal info form and make your prediction from the provided selection of 16 possible cover stars, a roster that includes Chris Bosh, Baron Davis, Kevin Durant, Kevin Garnett, Andre Iguodala, LeBron James, Yao Ming, Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki, Tony Parker, Chris Paul, Paul Pierce, Brandon Roy, Josh Smith, Dwayne Wade and Deron Williams.
Everyone who guesses correctly will be entered into a random prize drawing, with one winner taking home an NBA jersey autographed by the cover athlete and a copy of the game on the platform of choice (PS3, PS2 or Xbox 360). 10 runners-up will also win a free copy of the game on their preferred platform.
Sounds easy enough, right? So go enter already!
