Aside from the initial weirdness of seeing Sonic wielding a sword back in the age of King Arthur, it looks to be carrying on what Sonic in the Secret Rings started, and that’s a good thing. Sonic and the Black Knight is due out sometime next year exclusively for Wii.

Sega, Sega, Sega. What are you doing to the beloved Sonic the Hedgehog franchise? I’m just starting to get my head around Sonic Unleashed giving Sonic a werehog nighttime alter ego, and now Sonic is getting a Wii-exclusive follow up to Sonic and the Secret Rings that transports the “Blue Dude with a ‘Tude” into the realm of King Arthur. Sonic and the Black Knight is the name of the game, and it’s set to continue Sega’s “Storybook Series” of Sonic titles when it releases in Spring 2009. That date is important, too, as that’s the same time that the new Wii MotionPlus accessory is set to ship with Wii Sports Resort, and since Sonic will be wielding a sword in Black Knight (no, I’m not joking about that) it seems obvious that the game is being lined up to take advantage of Nintendo’s new piece of 1:1 motion-sensing controller hardware that has already been specifically shown as perfect for sword dueling games.

SEGA ANNOUNCES SONIC AND THE BLACK KNIGHT

A new addition to the Storybook Series of Sonic Titles

SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (July 21, 2008) – SEGA® of America, Inc. and SEGA of Europe today announced Sonic and the Black Knight™, an all-new Wii™-exclusive adventure. Part of the storybook series of games that began with Sonic and the Secret Rings™, this new title brings Sonic into the world of Arthurian legend and offers the world’s most famous blue hedgehog the chance to become a knight. Using the unique Wii control system, this exciting game will take advantage of both the Wii Remote™ and the Nunchuk™ to offer an interactive experience that Sonic fans will love.
