Sony’s PlayStation Now online game streaming service is ready to take a major step towards viability when its monthly subscription model goes live first on PlayStation 4 beginning next Tuesday, January 13 across the US and Canada.
Instead of paying ridiculous prices to digitally rent single games, PlayStation Now will offer a subscription plan of $19.99 per month or $44.99 for three months. That subscription includes unlimited access to stream a current library of over 100 PS3 games.
What do you make of the pricing? Perhaps $14.99 per month and $39.99 for three months would have hit the sweet spot, but once more PS3 games are added and the service begins offering PS1 and PS2 classics $20 a month will provide great value. I’m sure Sony would also win over more folks by offering a further discounted full year subscription plan somewhere in the ballpark of $120, but alas the current plan does not include any subscriptions longer than three month chunks.
If you’d like to try the service out before deciding to subscribe, a free seven-day trial will be available to PS4 users on launch day. Additionally, a free PlayStation Now theme for PS4 is available, and all users that download the theme by January 31st will automatically be entered into a drawing to win a subscription for a full year.
