The Elder Scrolls Online’s First Trailer Shows a Whole Lotta Nothing, But Hey, Here’s a Screenshot!

The Elder Scrolls Online‘s first trailer is the very definition of a teaser. Actually, it barely even qualifies as a teaser. A narrator spouts off a meaningless introduction as three dragons wind around eating each others’ tails to form the game’s circular logo. I’m guessing that’s supposed to symbolize the game’s three warring factions. Or maybe dragons are just into some pretty hardcore three-ways. I’ll leave you to figure that one out.

The trailer may not show anything of substance, but BethSoft, via Game Informer’s exclusive cover story reveal, has released the very first in-game screenshot. Let’s take a peek, shall we? (Right click, View Image to see it at hi-res.)

Still not much to go off of, but I’d say the game looks very much like a fantasy MMORPG (and some early reports are suggesting BethSoft is taking a WoW-clone approach). It sure doesn’t appear to share any stylistic similarities with the regular Elder Scrolls games, which is strange.

Can’t say my socks are being wowed off by what’s been announced thus far, but it’s still WAY too early to be making strong judgments. BethSoft is either going to find out the hard way that simply putting the Elder Scrolls brand on a slapdash MMO isn’t going to win over gamers’ subscription dollars or in all likelihood whip out some surprises at an inevitable E3 showcase that’ll get the hype train steamrolling in the right direction.
