Fable III is officially on for Xbox 360 release this holiday season, so you know what that means. Yep, that means it’s time for the Peter Molyneux hype machine to begin, and you won’t find more hype about such simple gameplay advancements than what’s in Lionhead’s first Fable III dev diary. I mean seriously, being able to hold hands with other characters is a major innovation? ICO did it back in 2001…
But the over-hype is nothing new for the Fable franchise. The most important thing is that the game looks quite beautiful and should be decent fun like its predecessors. The dev diary is embedded up top for your viewing pleasure, and six first-look screenshots are posted after the break.

It is interesting that Molyneux is now saying Fable III is ‘not a RPG’ … since for many the franchise was fairly marginal in that way from the start … it at least allows him to focus the hype machine and not deal with the backlash of those who think that ‘air farts’ are not some sort of gameplay innovation … 😉
Yeah, they talk a little bit about how the RPG stuff is still there but toned down to be more accessible, though there’s a part in the dev diary where Molyneux still talks about it like an RPG. Guess he’s just covering his bases 🙂
The thing I don’t get is why they continue to push Fable more and more casual. They make it M-rated with blood and other adult themes, yet they make gameplay that’s E for Everyone. I’ve just never understood the direction behind the Fable franchise: it was supposed to be the ultimate RPG to start, and since it didn’t live up to that hype it’s like they’ve decided to dumb it down as a casual action-RPG.
