The first original Legend of Zelda<\/em> game for the Nintendo 3DS is slated for a holiday season launch this year, Nintendo announced today during its latest Nintendo Direct web video.<\/p>\n

Although not a direct sequel to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past<\/em>, the new 3DS Zelda<\/em>, which is currently without an official subtitle, does take place in the same world as the SNES classic that I for one still believe is the series’ greatest installment. The new game is presented as a traditional top-down Zelda<\/em> adventure, but the art style and polygonal graphics are reminiscent of Ocarina of Time<\/em> and 3D depth of field tricks expand the Zelda<\/em> puzzle repertoire with new challenges.<\/p>\n

What’s truly odd about this next Zelda<\/em> game is a new mechanic that will allow Link to morph into a drawing on dungeon walls to reach areas polygon Link can’t get to, or to gain a better view of surrounding areas. It’s a neat idea, but from what little has been shown so far there is an art style clash between the 3D world and the 2D drawing that just looks kind of weird to me. Hopefully everything comes together better once story details emerge to tell us why Link is able to turn himself into graffiti art.<\/p>\n
