The 2013-2014 NBA season is officially under way with an opening night schedule of three games, headlined by a match-up between Eastern Conference powerhouses, the Chicago Bulls and the Miami Heat. The way the game is going so far — Miami posted a 21-point lead at halftime and at the time of this posting are firmly in control heading into the 4th quarter — shows that the Heat are definitely ready to win their third consecutive NBA championship. All the analysts and prognosticators are unsurprisingly predicting such an outcome, and now so is the video game world. At least based upon a season simulation 2K Sports ran today using the next-gen edition of NBA 2K14.

According to the simulation, the Heat will finish with the league’s best record of 66-16 and then march through the Cavaliers, Knicks, and Nets before taking down the Spurs in a rematch of last season’s Finals to claim the championship for the third time in as many seasons. LeBron James will also win league MVP honors yet again. LeBron James just so happens to be the game’s cover athlete so this whole deal could be completely biased. Then again he clearly is the best basketball player in the world so it’s not like this is some stretch of a prediction.

I can’t say the same thing for some of the other results of the simulation. Even though the team did improve over the off season, it’s hard to believe the Detroit Pistons will win enough games to lock down the 4th seed in the East, and that the Indiana Pacers will finish at the 6th spot with a record under .500. The reverse of that scenario sounds more believable to me. And I highly doubt the Memphis Grizzlies will outright miss the playoffs as the simulation predicts. I don’t see how the Trailblazers, Lakers, and Timberwolves will be able to win more games than the Grizz. But that’s the fun of video game simulations and predictions. The season is only starting and anything can happen!
