So there’s good news, and then there’s a little bit of bad news.<\/p>\n

The good news is that Destiny<\/em><\/a>, the shared world sci-fi first-person shooter from the creators of Halo<\/em>, has an official ship date. Bungie’s latest will launch worldwide on September 9, 2014 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.<\/p>\n

If you’ve been following the game’s development up to now, you’ve probably already noticed the bad news of this announcement. Yup, the game is now coming out later than originally anticipated. <\/p>\n

Activision and Bungie have been pushing a spring 2014 launch target for a while now (a trailer back in October<\/a> even ended with the tagline “Become Legend Spring 2014”), with the PlayStation-first beta test<\/a> previously scheduled to begin early next year ahead of the spring game launch. That schedule has shifted back a season, with the beta test now slated to take place over the summer leading up to the September 9th release (which technically will still make the game a summertime release).<\/p>\n

This isn’t terrible news worth raging over, it’s just a bit dispiriting because even though the game is coming to PS3 and Xbox 360, Destiny<\/em> had been building up momentum as an early system seller for the PS4 and Xbox One, both of which are in dire need of AAA software and project to have meager lineups through the first few months of next year. Destiny<\/em> moving to September only widens the software void for both consoles.<\/p>\n
