PS3 owners have been demanding and demanding support for in-game XMB functionality since the console launched. Sony confirmed earlier in the year that the feature was indeed in the works, but has since remained silence, even amidst all the recent rumors of its impending release and leaked sightings of it in working order. But today Sony has finally ended the silence and confirmed through its official US PlayStation blog that in-game XMB will be included as part of firmware update 2.40. But it gets even sweeter than that. Alongside the in-game XMB, firmware 2.40 will also introduce the long-awaited trophy system, the PS3’s supposed answer to Xbox 360 achievements. <\/p>\n

The only thing left shrouded in mystery is just when exactly firmware 2.40 will be treating PS3 owners with these awesome new features. The next firmware update, version 2.36, is “coming soon” according to today’s blog post from the Director of PlayStation Network Operations, and it’ll be a minor one, simply aiming to improve “system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles.” But no release plans have been provided or even hinted at for 2.40.
