The Last Remnant‘s two-pronged PC launch has been set in place today. The PC version of Square Enix’s new action-RPG IP, which first launched on Xbox 360 over the ’08 holiday season, will ship to retailers across North America on March 24th. Then a couple weeks later on April 9th, the game will release in digital download form via Steam as part of an agreement Square Enix inked with Valve today to bring its game portfolio to the world’s leading digital distribution platform.

The Last Remnant PC promises to be much more than a straight port of the Xbox 360 version. It is said to feature a number of significant improvements, including increased gameplay speed during battles (hopefully that means a better frame rate!), more fluid character animations, auto and manual save options in between consecutive battles, the ability to form unions with multiple leader units, graphical weapon previews to make weapon selection easier, new allied characters, and an option to choose Japanese or English voice-overs. Let’s also hope the 360 version’s general lack of polish gets cleaned up in the porting process!

“We hope to reach a new audience with the Games for Windows version of THE LAST REMNANT,” said John Yamamoto, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix Inc., and Square Enix Ltd., Square Enix’s European subsidiary. “The work that has been put into this version of the game is truly stunning and I hope that fans enjoy this exciting new adventure.”

“We are excited to offer the millions of Steam customers online access to Square Enix titles beginning with our major action RPG, THE LAST REMNANT,” said John Yamamoto, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix Inc. and Square Enix Ltd. “Square Enix is committed to delivering the best quality titles to PC gamers and distribution on Steam is one of the many steps we are taking to increase accessibility for fans globally.”

“Square Enix is a fantastic addition to the Steam lineup,” said Jason Holtman, director of business development at Valve. “We are thrilled that Square Enix chose to bring its diverse portfolio of titles to Steam and know that our customers will be ecstatic to hear this news.”

The Last Remnant‘s two-pronged PC launch has been set in place today.
