I found it very curious and extremely troubling that Microsoft failed to announce how much its newfangled motion-control camera is going to cost today. Usually when a launch date is announced for a new piece of hardware, a price is announced too. But not so in this instance, and that has me worried the device is going to be a fairly pricey item.<\/p>\n

Adding fuel to the fire, GameStop has posted a pre-order page for Kinect with a price listing of a whopping $150.<\/p>\n

GameStop also makes it clear on the same page that “official pricing has not been announced by the publisher” and that the listed price is merely an estimate, and I’ve also checked other retail sites like Amazon, Best Buy and Walmart for corroboration, but none list a price. So while this should be treated as rumor for now, I have to believe GameStop has at least some vague knowledge about a projected price range to begin asking for pre-orders, so even if this price isn’t ultimately 100% accurate, I doubt it’s that far off. <\/p>\n

Rumor reports have been indicating a lower price more around $100, but even that would be too costly to attract the casual audience, I would think, and it certainly won’t receive favorable reception from existing hardcore 360 users. If Kinect really winds up costing in the $100+ range, it is going to fail, just like the overpriced PSPgo has so far and just like the PS3 did early on when it was perceived to be too expensive at launch. <\/p>\n

Ironically it seems like Microsoft is turning the Xbox 360 into a launch PS3!<\/p>\n
