Two of my favorite platformer franchises of all-time reemerged at E3 this week. I’ve already touched on The Sly Collection here and here, so now I’d like to turn your attention to Rayman Origins. That’s right, y’all. Rayman is back, and this ain’t no Rabbids spin-off or mini-game tie-in!

Rayman Origins is said to be an episodic platform adventure in development by series creator Michel Ancel and an independent team of five artists and developers using a new engine called the UbiArt Framework. Specifics haven’t been announced beyond what’s shown in the trailer embedded below, but information posted on the UbiArt blog points to the first episode being released this year for “HD consoles.” The only two HD consoles I know of are the PS3 and Xbox 360, so expect to see this one show up on PSN and Xbox Live Arcade.

Other than that, the gameplay throws back to the series’ 2D roots and trademark slapstick humor, and the video also suggests there will be some form of co-op mechanic between Rayman and his fat, blobby companion named Globox. The hand-drawn toon graphics are visually arresting as well, as you can see in the trailer and screenshots.
