The Nintendo 3DS game library outlook is looking brighter and brighter now that we’re finally almost past the ‘launch window’, which Nintendo has set to expire once E3 begins in a couple weeks. The second half of 2011 is shaping up to offer handheld gamers plenty of great games to play, and today one more potential hit has been added to the growing pile.

After nearly a decade since the previous installment, Sega’s legendary ninja action franchise, Shinobi, is returning for an exclusive outing on the Nintendo 3DS. Crafted by Griptonite Games, the new 3D Shinobi is a return to the side-scrolling ways of the earlier titles, incorporating a branching combo system made up of melee, ranged and acrobatic attacks, StreetPass functionality, and various unlockable challenges and achievements into a familiar gameplay package.

Graphically, the game is far from the sexiest 3DS game, as you can see from the first trailer and screenshots at the bottom of the page. But it definitely appears to be going for a stylized look over high poly counts and intricate texture detail, and I actually dig it.

Mark your calendars, folks: Shinobi returns in September!
