Price drops are always a hot topic heading into E3 every year, and this year, with the dawning of the 3DS era and the era of the Wii’s successor about to begin, Nintendo is slashing prices on its current systems. <\/p>\n

At the beginning of May, Nintendo shaved $30 off of the Wii’s price tag<\/a>, bringing the family-oriented motion control console down to $169.99 and packaging it with a copy of Mario Kart<\/em>. Now, heading into next week’s E3 event, Nintendo is set to trim a little fat from the DS Lite, a system that has been discontinued according to rumor (with the DSi, DSi XL and 3DS on the market, it would only make sense for Nintendo to stop producing the DS Lite).<\/p>\n

Effective June 5th, DS Lite models will drop from $129.99 to the new low price of only $99.99 at U.S. retailers. Additionally, six classic Mario<\/em> games will be re-released with new ‘Mario-red’ boxes to “help shoppers identify select fan-favorite Mario games,” as if Mario’s mug on the front of the boxes wasn’t identifiable enough already. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that these “evergreen” Mario<\/em> titles will come with a price drop of their own, which would have made for a great one-two combo to go with the DS Lite slashing.<\/p>\n
